The Romanian workers were introduced to a handy device known as a water level. It's simply a clear hose filled with water. Because the water at the two ends of the hose are at the same level it can be used over much larger distances than a spirit level.


The neighbour in the background of the photo above is carrying a bag of corn from the pile in front of his house, which can just be seen past the original house. It was a bit of a social event, as can be seen below.
