Some streetchildren, both boys and girls, cut themselves. This is sometimes because they can get more sympathy (and therefore more money) if they have a fresh, bleeding wound. Sometimes, though, it is simply because they hate themselves and hate their life so much. Many streetkids have arms that are much more scarred than the one pictured above. The boy in the photograph does not live at the boys' home.

This sort of self mutilation is not limited just to streetchildren. There are people from all sorts of backgrounds who cut themselves, although generally more girls do it than boys. (In the western world boys seem to come up with other forms of self destructive behaviour.) Whatever the reasons, people who do this need help. It's not something that should simply be accepted, it's not just a lifestyle choice.
